El Choro trek, Bolivia
Practical reasons for interest
- Multi-day backpacking down an Andean elevational gradient very unique and exciting!
Concerns
- Few birding reports
- Transportation at the bottom (Chairo) requires help from locals to arrange on the fly
- Some supplies likely need to be obtained in La Paz, ex: cooking stove fuel, food, etc.
- Extra days also need to be spent acclimatizing to elevation.
- How sketchy is the trek's infrastructure at the moment? Ex: bridges, ziplines(?!), etc.
- Travel to La Paz quite expensive, compare with other Latam destinations. And flights all seem to arrive in the middle of the night (2-4am), and depart extremely early (5am).
- Avoid wet season. Dry season is April-September?
- Good birding around Coroico, but returning to La Paz can be hairy, even on the new highway
- Bolivia infamously dysfunctional, expect frustrations
