Bird family listing
There's an increasing interest among bird listers in seeing all of the world's families of birds, of which there are currently 252 according to Avilist taxonomy, v2025.
Seeing all 11,000+ species of birds is likely impossible in a lifetime, and is subject to constant minor taxonomic changes. And anyway, is it all that exciting to see yet another drab flycatcher, that looks almost identical to dozens of others? By comparison, seeing all 252 families is doable with some effort, and also allows you to experience a full breadth of major diversity in birds.
I don't know yet if seeing all of the bird families is a realistic goal for me or not. There are many bird families for which I've barely scratched the surface of getting to know them, and filling those in seems worthwhile too. But tracking bird families does provide an index of how 'unique' an area's birds might be for me. Monotypic bird families are of particular interest, as those are especially unique birds.
Resources
A subset of Birding tools, with some additional color
- Avilist bird taxonomy, v2025 - current standard unified bird taxonomy
- Birds of the World - family/genus/species accounts
- Scythebill - Software that can track families seen. Can generate a map of World Family Lifers by country, though it doesn't appear to be accurate for me. Not straightforward to get a view of families still unseen.
- Birdstat - website where your eBird data can be uploaded and analyzed, reports are more user-friendly than Scythebill. 'Family Summary' tab neatly shows families seen and not seen, and also species totals and proportions for the former.
