Oman
Sites of interest
- Salalah
- Mirbat pelagic
- Wadis and oases
Top target birds
- Hypocolius - a monotypic family, see Bird family listing
- Arabian Grosbeak
- Sandgrouse
- Jouanin's Petrel
- Persian Shearwater
- Crab Plover?
Practical reasons for interest
- Good tourism infrastructure, without being very touristy
- Can freely camp and explore anywhere
- Mix of Asiatic and African bird influence, from east to west
- Wealth of independent trip reports, see below
- Good food, friendly hospitable people
Concerns
- Language - English widely spoken by service workers, but not by other Omanis
- Long drive (three days?) through barren gravel desert from Muscat to Salalah. Perhaps better to fly, or skip Muscat entirely? See Robby's maxim.
- Bang-for-buck vs. tropics - maybe more attractive to European/WP birders than to North Americans?
- Low quantity of birds, both individuals and diversity/species? High quality though.
